Instructor and Lecturer on Calligraphy, Illumination and Gilding
Valerie’s formal training as an engrosser (hand lettering and illumination of formal documents and awards) began at an engrossing studio in Chicago.
Her passion for the medieval style of decorated letters and vines has taken her around the country teaching workshops on illumination and calligraphy for the past 30 years.
She has demonstrated the techniques of Illumination and Gilding at The Chazen Museum (University of WI) , The Snite Museum (Notre Dame) and the Knights of Columbus Museum. Her work has been purchased by the Newberry Library in Chicago and has been published in several books and publications.
She has been on the faculty of St. Michael’s Institute for Sacred Art at St. Edmund’s Retreat Center since its inception in 1999 and has several commissions on display in their chapel (www.endersisland.com)
